The Compasses Inn was first registered in 1829 to serve beer to local farmers. Originally known as “God Encompasses”, this name was so frequently mispronounced as “Goat Encompasses” that it became its name.
The word goat has since been dropped and it is known simply as The Compasses Inn.
The picturesque Tillingbourne river runs between the pub and the beer garden, but watch out for the ghost that is said to skip along it.
